What does it cost to study in Germany?
- Tuition (annual)
- EUR 0–1,500/semester at public universities for most programs; Baden-Württemberg charges EUR 1,500/semester for non-EU students. Private universities and some specialist programs charge EUR 10,000–25,000/year
- Living costs (annual)
- EUR 11,000–14,000/year (Wohngeld + accommodation + food + insurance); Munich and Berlin at the higher end, smaller cities (Aachen, Karlsruhe, Bonn) more affordable
Blocked-account (Sperrkonto) requirement of approximately EUR 11,904 for the first year (2024 figure, updated annually) is the standard way to demonstrate funds for the visa. Health insurance is mandatory and runs ~EUR 110/month.
Student visa for Germany
German National Visa (Type D — for stays longer than 90 days, includes student categories)
- Admission letter (Zulassungsbescheid) from a German university is the gateway document.
- Financial requirement demonstrated via blocked-account (Sperrkonto) of ~EUR 11,904 — Fintiba, Expatrio, and Deutsche Bank are common providers.
- Visa interview at the German consulate (Mumbai / Chennai / Bengaluru / Kolkata / New Delhi serve different regions of India).
- Processing time: 6-12 weeks; book the appointment slot 3+ months in advance during peak season (June-August).
- Work rights: 120 full days or 240 half-days per year of paid work alongside studies. Student jobs (HiWi positions) and internships within the program are excluded from this limit.

Entry requirements
- English proficiency
- For English-taught programs: IELTS 6.5+ / TOEFL iBT 90+ typical. Some top programs (TUM, RWTH) ask for 7.0+.
- Academic baseline
- For masters: a recognised bachelors with at least 60-70%+ depending on the program. For bachelors: Class XII completion is generally insufficient on its own — most German bachelors require either a year of recognised Indian undergraduate study or completion of a Studienkolleg (preparatory year) in Germany.
German-taught programs require TestDaF or DSH proficiency. Engineering students applying to TUM / RWTH / KIT typically need to demonstrate APS certification (Akademische Prüfstelle) — a transcript-verification process via the German Embassy in New Delhi.
Scholarships available
- DAAD Scholarships — EUR 850-1,200/month + tuition (where applicable) + travel allowance
- Deutschlandstipendium — EUR 300/month + university match (open to all enrolled students)
- Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters — Full tuition + EUR 1,000-1,400/month stipend (selected programs)
- Foundation-specific scholarships — Heinrich Böll / Konrad Adenauer / Friedrich Ebert foundations offer political-foundation scholarships for masters / PhD
Post-study work options
After graduating from a German university, you can apply for an 18-month Job-Seeker Residence Permit. During this period you can work any job (skilled or unskilled) while searching for a position aligned with your qualification. Once you secure skilled employment, transition to the EU Blue Card (requires a job offer at ~EUR 45,300+ for general roles or ~EUR 41,000+ for shortage occupations like IT / engineering / medicine). The Blue Card is the fastest pathway to permanent residence (21 months with B1 German, 33 months without).
What's the German application timeline?
Winter semester (October) is the primary intake; Summer semester (April) accepts a smaller share. Application deadlines: typically 15 July for Winter and 15 January for Summer at most universities, though TUM and some others use uni-assist with earlier centralised deadlines (e.g., 31 May for Winter). Plan 12 months out: APS certification (3-month process) → testing → applications → visa (6-12 weeks).
Is Germany really tuition-free?
For non-EU students at public universities in most Bundesländer (16 German states), yes — only a nominal semester fee of EUR 100-350 (covers transit pass + student services). Baden-Württemberg is the major exception, charging EUR 1,500/semester for non-EU students. Private universities (Jacobs, Frankfurt School, ESMT, EBS) and dual / executive programs charge full tuition, often comparable to UK / Australian rates.
Do I need German language skills?
For English-taught masters programs (engineering, computer science, business at TUM / RWTH / TU Berlin), no German is required at admission — but learning to B1-B2 level meaningfully helps with the post-study job search outside multinational firms. For German-taught programs (most bachelors), C1-level proficiency at admission is mandatory.
Frequently asked questions about studying in Germany
APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) is a German government verification of Indian academic credentials, mandatory for most Indian students applying to German universities. Process: submit transcripts → ~3 months review → APS certificate valid for university applications. Apply via the German Embassy in New Delhi or aps-india.de. The application fee is ~EUR 25.
Yes — international students can work full-time during scheduled semester breaks (typically February-March and August-September). During semesters the 120 full days / 240 half-days per year limit applies. Working as a HiWi (university student assistant) within your program is generally exempt from this counting.
Strong demand exists in engineering, IT, automotive, pharma, and mechanical / electrical / chemical engineering. Roles in finance, consulting, and tech are widely available in Frankfurt / Berlin / Munich / Hamburg. Salary expectations: graduate engineers EUR 50,000-65,000 starting; specialist IT roles can hit EUR 70,000-90,000. Networking in German engineering culture is relationship-driven — internships during studies are the highest-leverage move.
No — the EU Blue Card is a residence-and-work permit (not permanent). It's faster to qualify for than the standard German residence permit, and it's the bridge to Niederlassungserlaubnis (permanent settlement). With Blue Card + B1 German + 21 months of employment, you can apply for permanent residence; without B1 German, 33 months.
German degrees from recognised universities (listed in the Anabin database) are widely recognised in India, including by AIU for equivalence. Engineering and IT credentials translate cleanly; medical degrees require FMGE / NeXT clearance for practice in India as with other foreign medical degrees.
