Should I take TOEFL or IELTS for US admissions?

TOEFL has historically been the US-preferred test and is recognised by every US university. IELTS is now accepted by most US universities but still has narrower coverage at some smaller liberal arts colleges. If your target list is all US: TOEFL is the safer choice. If you're applying across US + UK + Australia, IELTS gives broader coverage with one score.

What's the academic-discussion task?

Replaced the older 'independent essay' in the 2023 TOEFL revision. You see a discussion forum-style prompt from a professor + two student responses; you write a 100-word response stating your position and supporting it. The task tests structured argumentation under time pressure — different muscle than IELTS Task 2 essays.

How are integrated tasks scored?

Integrated speaking + writing tasks reward accurate summarisation of the source material (reading passage + lecture), clear delivery, and coherent connection between the sources. The algorithm + human raters both check that you accurately captured the key points of both sources, not just one. Many students lose marks by paraphrasing only the reading or only the lecture.
