What does it cost to study in Canada?

Tuition (annual)
CAD 25,000–45,000/year (undergrad); CAD 18,000–35,000/year (masters); some programs higher (Rotman MBA, Schulich, etc.)
Living costs (annual)
CAD 12,000–18,000/year outside Toronto/Vancouver; CAD 18,000–25,000/year in Toronto and Vancouver

Quebec province charges Quebec residents and Canadians lower tuition; international students pay the higher tier. Quebec also has a distinct immigration pathway via PEQ for graduates of Quebec institutions.

Student visa for Canada

Study Permit

  • Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) is the gateway document.
  • Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) introduced in 2024 — required for most new applications.
  • Financial requirement: GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate) of CAD 20,635 (2024 figure, updated annually) + first-year tuition.
  • Processing time: 4-12 weeks; Student Direct Stream (SDS) used to offer faster processing but was discontinued in November 2024 — now all India applicants go via the regular stream.
  • Work rights: up to 24 hours/week off-campus during semesters (raised from 20 in 2024); full-time on-campus and during scheduled breaks.

Entry requirements

English proficiency
IELTS 6.0-6.5 (no band below 6.0) for most masters and bachelors; some quantitative masters and MBA expect 7.0+. PTE 60+ widely accepted. French TEF / TCF needed for French-medium programs (mostly Quebec).
Academic baseline
Class XII 70%+ for direct undergrad entry; 65%+ acceptable for diploma / college pathway. For masters, 3.0+ GPA equivalent (~70%+) with a recognised bachelors. GRE 310+ for general masters; 320+ Quant for top-tier engineering / CS.

MBA programs at Rotman / Schulich / Ivey expect GMAT 650+ and 2-5 years of work experience. Co-op programs (Waterloo etc.) integrate paid work terms into the degree.

Scholarships available

  • Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships — CAD 50,000/year for 3 years (PhD)
  • Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships — CAD 70,000/year (postdoc)
  • Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship (UofT) — Full tuition + living expenses (undergrad, highly competitive)
  • University-specific entrance scholarships — CAD 5,000-25,000 — most universities offer merit awards to international students

Post-study work options

The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) allows up to 3 years of post-study open work (no employer sponsorship needed) for graduates of eligible programs. PGWP duration matches program length up to 3 years. After PGWP, transitioning to Permanent Residency via Express Entry (Canadian Experience Class) is the most common pathway — Canadian work experience + age + education + language scores feed into the CRS score; cutoffs vary by draw round.

What's the Canada application timeline?

September intake is the main cycle; January and May intakes offer real flexibility for students who miss September. Applications typically open 8-10 months before intake at most universities. Plan 9-12 months out: testing → applications → Letter of Acceptance → Provincial Attestation Letter → GIC + tuition deposit → Study Permit (allow 12+ weeks since Student Direct Stream was discontinued).

How has the PGWP changed recently?

The 2024 reforms tightened PGWP eligibility — graduates of public-private partnership colleges lost PGWP eligibility for new enrolments; some programs now have language-test requirements at the PGWP application stage; and there are field-of-study restrictions for diploma-level college students. University degree graduates from public universities remain broadly PGWP-eligible. Verify your specific program with IRCC's eligible-institution list before enrolling.

Is the PR pathway via Express Entry realistic?

Yes — most successful Indian PR applicants in recent years have come via the Canadian Experience Class after PGWP. Build CRS through PGWP work experience (typically 1-2 years skilled work), language scores (IELTS Academic 7+ helps significantly), and provincial nomination programs targeted at sectors with worker shortages. Cutoffs fluctuate; current draws are at CRS 510-540 for general Express Entry.

Frequently asked questions about studying in Canada

SDS was discontinued for India applicants in November 2024 and there is no announced timeline for its return. All Indian applicants currently apply via the regular study permit stream. Processing times are longer (10-16 weeks vs the old 20-day SDS turnaround) — plan accordingly.
