What does my GRE General Test score mean?
- Verbal 158+ / Quant 165+
- Competitive for top US engineering and CS masters programs (CMU / Berkeley / Illinois / GeorgiaTech).
- Verbal 160+ / Quant 168+
- Strong score for Ivy League STEM programs and top humanities programs. Common bar for fully-funded PhDs.
- AWA 4.0+
- Acceptable for STEM programs (where AWA matters less). 4.5-5.0 expected for humanities + social science.
How does KC Coimbatore teach GRE General Test?
- Modes
- In-person at Coimbatore center • Live online
- Course duration
- 10-14 weeks (foundation-to-test track); 6-8 weeks (accelerated, for students starting from 290+)
- Batch sizes
- 10-15 students per batch
KC's GRE prep emphasizes the section-adaptive nature of the test — performance in the first Verbal / Quant section determines difficulty of the second, which determines score range. Prep includes 6+ full mock tests using ETS PowerPrep software + section-wise drilling on weak areas. Fee structure and current batch dates: please enquire below.
How does the shorter GRE compare to the older version?
Same scoring scale and section types; cut to 1h58m by reducing each section's question count and dropping the unscored experimental section. Content difficulty is unchanged — the time pressure is similar to the old test since per-question time stays comparable.
Is GRE required for my masters program?
Increasingly optional post-COVID — many US programs went GRE-optional and have stayed that way (most humanities + many STEM at lower-tier universities). However, top-tier programs (top-30 US universities for STEM, top humanities programs) still expect or strongly recommend GRE. A strong GRE can offset weaker GPA / extracurriculars.
Can I use GRE for MBA admissions instead of GMAT?
Yes — most US MBA programs (Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, Sloan, Booth, etc.) accept GRE as an alternative to GMAT, with no preference stated. Some applicants choose GRE if applying to both grad programs and MBA programs to avoid taking two tests. Conversion: GRE Quant 167+ is roughly GMAT 700+ equivalent.
GRE General Test coaching — frequently asked questions
Within Verbal and Quant, your first section's performance determines the difficulty of the second section. Higher difficulty in the second section means higher potential score; lower means a capped range. The algorithm reports your final scaled score after combining both sections.
Once every 21 days, up to 5 times in a 12-month period. ETS reports all attempts taken in the last 5 years via the ScoreSelect feature, but you can choose which scores to send to universities.
Top engineering / CS programs (CMU SCS, Berkeley, MIT EECS) typically see admitted-student Quant scores at 165-170; strong programs at 160-167. Below 160 starts to require offset via strong GPA, research, and other factors.
Generally yes if you have 6+ weeks until application deadlines. KC counsels on the cost-benefit per-student — sometimes investing the prep time into stronger SOP / research statements / LORs has higher impact than chasing a 5-point GRE improvement.
No — bookings via ETS' website. We help with prep, slot-strategy, ScoreSelect strategy, and confirmation that your target programs accept GRE (especially relevant for MBA programs).
