## Format

- **Duration:** ~2 hours total (revised shorter format introduced 2023)
- **Scoring:** Overall 0-120 (each section 0-30, summed). Mix of auto-scoring + human raters for speaking and writing.
- **Sections:**
  - Reading (~35 min) - 2 academic passages, 10 questions each - main idea, detail, inference, vocabulary in context.
  - Listening (~36 min) - 2 conversations + 3 lectures, 6 questions each - note-taking allowed throughout.
  - Speaking (~16 min) - 4 tasks: 1 independent (personal preference), 3 integrated (read + listen + speak).
  - Writing (~30 min) - 2 tasks: 1 integrated (read + listen + write summary), 1 academic-discussion task (responding to professor + classmate posts).

## Score bands

- **80-90** - Meets the baseline for most US masters and many US bachelors programs. Adequate for most non-US destinations accepting TOEFL.
- **100-110** - Competitive for top-30 US universities. Common bar for Ivy League + STEM-heavy programs (MIT / Stanford / CMU).
- **110+** - Required for some US health-science programs (medical, nursing) and most US law schools. Achievable with structured prep + writing focus.

## Should I take TOEFL or IELTS for US admissions?

TOEFL has historically been the US-preferred test and is recognised by every US university. IELTS is now accepted by most US universities but still has narrower coverage at some smaller liberal arts colleges. If your target list is all US: TOEFL is the safer choice. If you're applying across US + UK + Australia, IELTS gives broader coverage with one score.

## What's the academic-discussion task?

Replaced the older 'independent essay' in the 2023 TOEFL revision. You see a discussion forum-style prompt from a professor + two student responses; you write a 100-word response stating your position and supporting it. The task tests structured argumentation under time pressure - different muscle than IELTS Task 2 essays.

## How are integrated tasks scored?

Integrated speaking + writing tasks reward accurate summarisation of the source material (reading passage + lecture), clear delivery, and coherent connection between the sources. The algorithm + human raters both check that you accurately captured the key points of both sources, not just one. Many students lose marks by paraphrasing only the reading or only the lecture.

## Frequently asked questions

### How long is my TOEFL score valid?

Two years from the test date. Most universities require scores from within this window; older scores need a retake.

### Can I take TOEFL at home?

Yes - TOEFL iBT Home Edition is available for India test-takers using a personal computer and webcam, monitored by remote proctor. Same content and scoring as the test-center version. Useful if local centre availability is limited.

### How often can I retake TOEFL?

There's a 3-day gap requirement between attempts. Unlimited retakes overall. Universities typically take your highest single-attempt score.

### Does TOEFL or PTE matter for US student visa?

F-1 visas don't have a separate English-test requirement - the university's admission decision is the gate. However, your TOEFL / PTE / IELTS score appears in your I-20 supporting documents and the consular officer may reference it during the visa interview to gauge oral fluency.
